Hey,

My company recently purchased a Dell 6850, to run one database program. They want RedHat AS installed and the external raid enclosure configured. They also asked me to install oracle on top of RedHat so the programmers could move the DB program over.

The specs on the 6850 are:
2 Internal sets of RAID 0 73gb 15k hard disks
1 external 8 drive raid configuration SCSI (needs to be configured as 1 driveset?)
16gb ram
4 3.4ghz xeon processors

Has anyone configured redhat AS on a box like this? any guidelines i should look into? What about oracle? (i know there are books on JUST installing it).

Oracle requires 256 Mb of RAM to run on Linux, so I guess you'll be fine.
I've run Oracle on SuSE 10, and RH ES 1-3, and FC4, so I guess you will have no problems (apart from the usual issues with setting up Oracle).

Just give it a bash - it'll be fine, and you'll soon see the problems if there are any.

Issues I've run into in the past range from wrong gcc versions / libstdc versions, to missing libraries (libaio is a favourite), to it hoping certain init.d scripts are present, to forcing installations into directories you want Oracle to go into, and directories it wants to go into.

However, the last version I installed, 10g XE, went in a treat, once I had installed libaio, and frigged the init.d scripts :)
