RedHat 9...sound only comes on after making volume adjustment in Kmix

I'm runnin RedHat 9... and sound only comes on after I adjust the volume bar in Kmix... for some reason after i restart the computer, I have to go back into Kmix and adjust volume again to get any sound... and what I mean by adjustment...is moving the bar up or down... Once the sound comes on, it stays on.. I've experienced this before in previous and other linux operating systems.. There's gotta be a logical explanation...thanx for your feedback...
