I've done a lot of updates to my redhat 9 machine using yum but upon restarting it now just hangs after logging me on(gnome, I think).
I can get in through SSH and through my webmin interface, but I'm not sure where to start troubleshooting this problem. Are there logs I can look at? There is no error message when I logon, so I'm at a loss on how to start dealing with this problem.

TIA

Look in /var/log in messages, dmesg and XFree86... You might also consider using ctrl+F1 to get to a plain TTY for debugging.

Possilble problems that could cause the "hang" include: X's config being wrong, not using proper graphics driver (then you should not have gotten a graphical logon screen) and problems with that user's "dot" files.

You may also want to look up Sys Rq.

Have you tried to create a new user and see if that user can log in, if so, there's a problems with you "dot" files.

For newbies - the "dot" files are config files which are located in /home/users_login_directory and are, by default, hidden from view, do 'ls -la' to see them.
