Redhat 9 Japanese Language Input

I assume that this is a very simple resolution, but I cannot work out how to switch between input locales on Redhat 9.

I have tried everything that I can find but I cannot enter Japanese characters in any of the applications. Despite the fact that the OS is running in Japanese mode, I can only input in English and not Japanese.

Please help!

Anyone? If this is just an additional component install, could you give me the name of the package please.

Does no one have any idea? The same thing probably applies to other languages like Korean and Chinese...

I hava version 7 and never been able to type japanese.
When set up I checked support for japanese language and only choose KDE (no gnome or games).
In KDE:
ctrl + F2 ->
kcontrol ->
personalization ->
country & language ->
language: japanese (ja) ->
apply ->
reboot (yep I come from windows) ->
ctrl + F2 ->
kterm ->
typed kterm agin so I can see the output from the other kterm in this window ->
in the other kterm shift + space ->
first window gives: warning: conversion server not found ->
killed jserver and cannaserver ->
started them (no errors or warnings) ->
shift + space ->
NOOOOOO, same warning.


Don't know how to set the conversion server but I know it worked one time (for 5 minutes)

I was thinking of downoading redhat 9 but going by your post this would be a waiste of time and CD space.

If the Chinese government is going to use Linux I wonder how they do it? I never been able to do it.

Info, I am not a Japanese speaker my whife is. I know a little bit about computers but can't read Japanese and my whife knows nothing about computers but can read Japanese.

If anybody can tell me what to look for (searched the Internet and found some info but none that fixed it)

Ok, so redhat 7.1 installs and runs jserver and canna (cannaserver) but doesn't start kinput2
Loged in and run:
ctrl + F2
kterm ->
/usr/X11R6/bin/kinput2 -canna ->
ctrl + F2
kterm ->
kterm ->
shift + space gets me the A sign in hiragana and typing works like windows IME. For example haru -> space -> arrow key select kanji and enter to select the kanji.

I am left with 2 questions:
1. I don't seem to be able to insert spaces between the words unless I shift + space off space and shift + space on. There must be an easyer way to type spaces.
2. I am only been able to type Japanese in kinput. How do I write an email, submit japanese text in a web browser, chat, write a document in Japanese. Since the only programm supporting shift + space seems to be kinput (a console).

Ok, the space is solved japanese don't seem to be using it much.

But one thing bothers me, I downloaded and installed the latest openoffice 1.1 and have no way of typing japanese in any of the apps (shift + space does nothing). Have the asian setting to japanese.

I have the feeling that kinput2 ONLY works with kterm so are Japanese people expected to type all of their japanese typing in a console window??

Evan when I did my typing in the conse the characters did't copy and pase in any app as well.

Asked her to look it up but she could't find any examples or tutorials that use OTHER programs than kterm.

Yipee, got it all working for RH 7.1
When installing I choose Japanese as the main language (unchecked English and checked Japanese) allso checked English because my Japanese isn't that good.

One tip though, make sure you can install without understanding the text displayed during the installation and know how to change your account after installing.

Because RH 7.1 doesn't come with openoffice I got it from openoffice.org but the JP version 1.1 needs a package that needs a package that needs a package ... The English version does let me type japanese but doesn't display them correctly.

Thinking of downloading RH9 because when I type japanese the text that I tipe hides behind the window's titlebar and RH9 probably comes with openoffice/MSN client.
