I have tried every single rpm out there and cannot get this to work. I have tried to use the mysql that comes with redhat and it won't work. I've read the manual on mysql.com and it assumes you know all syntax and have alot of experience with mysql. I just cannot get this to work. If I do manage to get it installed and try to use MySQL Control center to access my server I get "Host 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' is not allowed to connect to this MySQL server".

I've exhausted all options. Does anyone have a step by step guide to installing mysql on a linux machine AND granting access to be able to aminister it with MySQL Control Center?

Make sure you have the username and password setup properly for that machine. Like sleipnir214 was asking why it was on the same machine, localhost would be the same machine, but security must be setup to ALLOW traffic from certain IP's using a username and password. Usually the localhost by default I beleive has the username as "root" and no password... Don't leave it like that for long. In the documentation there is a section that will talk you through changing the root password...

when installing RH 9
httpd and MysqlD are not started
did you check that they both run
also I will D-load and install phpMyAdmin
then I will verify through phpMyAdminthat I have all grants given
if it is on your local machine don't worry and give you the max

if you cannot you may connect to MySQl through a command line and type grant....
post if you have a problem with the syntax

I was running MySQLCC on another machine. I will try the above and see what happens. I apprec the responses.

I do not get it

you should not have to D-load anything or install any RPM
unless you did not get the CD

if not get one; everything is in there do a custom install and don't even try to figure what you need or not, go for all...
(reserve 5 gig fot RH) if I rem correctly you only need 3+
but it's, fine gigs do not cost a bundle!

then verify that httpd and MySQl run

you will be all set

httpd: don't forget to edit the .ini

what about upgrading....

try to go in KDE, install package
one -uninstall
do not del but uninstall (because dependancies)
two - reinstall new pack

however the version coming along with RH9 is quite decent
do you have a need to upgrade?

I don't know about upgrading MS style and letting the install figure files to keep and flies to update
actually I am not sure it would be opssible
but, sorry I do not that answer

someone with that info might jump in

Yup it should be that easy but I chose http and mysql during my install and mysql did not work. I cannot access it from another machine nor can I access it from my redhat box. I have verified that it is running..It keeps telling me I do not have permissions. So there is something missing during the install. I have started over and installed from scratch 3 times and still the same at the end. Some step is missing during the install process.
