Hi there,
I have just installed RedHat 8 Professional. The installation process went smooth but the system can't restart after installation.
The error message I get is as follows:

Kernel panic: no init found Try passing init= option to kernel

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Antonio

/sbin/init has dissapeared.

Are you sure you're booting from the right partition?? It sounds like you've run lilo with an invalid root partition in the configuration file??

Well, if you've only just installed it maybe not.

What partition are you booting from. What does the boot mesages say??

I am booting from hda1. I have installed LILO on the MBR, I am also running WinXP on sda1 but as I usually do I don't add it into LILO as my hda1 (linux) is a removable disk and only boots up when inserted.
This time instead I found XP it in the list of available systems in LILO although I have selected to not add it during the installation

I hope this helps you

Thanks a lot

I think the problem is that the disks get switch around in BIOS. Where LILO is installed doesn't make any difference.

You have to tell LILO to switch the to BIOS drives. Can't remember exactly how, but it's in the LILO documentation.

It looks something like:

bios 0x82
disk = hda
bios 0x83
disk = sda

But check the documentation.
