I have purchased (1) a usb exterior modem and (2)
a pci controller based modem.. both advertised as
RedHat compatible..

In both instances, the "engineering" department of
the distributor/manufacturer was unable to install
such on their own computers.. let alone on mine..

Request help on a combination of a Linux distro
and a compatible modem for a Linux newbie..

VirgilC,

What modem(s) are you using? Have you visited They have a database of modems that have been made to work under Linux and generally have a contact that you can email who has made that modem work.

I generally use an external serial modem with Linux, they will always work. I haven't gotten any of my USB modems working under Linux, but I haven't tried real hard either.

Yes.. followed the recommendations of Linmodem.org..
the first try was the Zoom external.. related my steps
to install to the contact.. he advised they were all
correct.. guessed they had changed the source code..
(Zoom couldn't get it installed on their own computer)
My second attempt was the Archtek controller based PCI as
listed on Linmodem.org.. after a couple weeks of correspondence.. the manufacturer advised there was a bug in the source code and the chipmaker was too busy to fix it..

Kinda lost faith in Linmodem.org.. thanks for your
response..

Forget USB, unless you can configure Linux to use a USB port successfully.
Forget PCI, (winmodem), unless it's a "hard" modem.
Get an external serial modem that's not USB and then it will simply work, because Linux treats it as a standard serial device.

Jim

Thanks Jim..
Guess I thought that the USB external might work because the USB mouse worked.. also thought that a controller
based PCI with the Penguin logo might work..
but neither did..

OK.. was hoping for a suggested product.. but will
go looking for an external serial modem..

And people wonder why some find Linux difficult
to break into..

Any external serial modem will work.
Diamond Supra Express is great, USR also make a couple of models and the price has dropped radically. Newegg had one for $39 but I can't find it now.
Try and get one with the Conexant (Rockwell) chipset, or a USR (which uses the TI chipset). If possible, stay away from Cyrix/Ambient/Intel, however the Lucent "Mars" chipset is also really good.
Linux support is by far the best for Rockwell chipsets.

Cheers,
Jim
