Redhat 7, KDE DNS Issue???

Hello. I have (finally) sat down and started to learn Linux, so forgive me for being rather slow at this! I have been researching this issue before posting, but I am now stumped!

I am using Redhat 7, KDE. I have my 3com 3c905b set up using DHCP. ifconfig shows everything is fine, and the system even picked up my nameservers without any trouble.

Here is the fun......
-I can't open a web page in netscape OR lynx unless I type in the IP address. Of course, if I go to for example, it will pull up text, but no pictures.... Thought it might be DNS problem.
-using nslookup, I can hit every website that I try. No problem there.
-also, of course, I can ping anything on the network by IP (nameservers, other workstations, everything)

What gives? The admin at this location claims that everything is opened up, but this is the only non-windows based box that is trying to get out past the firewall.....

Any ideas??

Thank you in advance! ----------------------------------------

From testing the system, it does appear that the firewall is the issue. My question, however, is what do I need to open up to get the linux box through it?

I had read an article saying to check UDP ports....where do I start?

Any help would be appreciated! ----------------------------------------

Is your DNS server on the same network as you, or is it on the other side of the firewall? If its on the other side of the firewall, you may have to open up port 53 to allow DNS requests through.

Can you ping hostnames on your internal LAN?

I thought you said you couldn't access anything by hostname? I'm not sure what you mean when you say it pulls up text, but no pictures?

Sorry, my mistake....I can go to yahoo by IP, not by hostname! At that point, it will pull up text, but no pictures. Somebody graciously clued me in that the text will pull up just fine, but the pictures load as I honostly don't know if this is true, but it makes sense....

The DNS is on the other side of the firewall. I will check port 53 tomorrow!

As I am not at the machine in question, I will need to check pinging by hostname tommorow, I can ping everything by IP, but I don't recall if pinging hostnames work (tried so many things that my mind is jello). I will have to check that tomorrow!

Thanks for the assistance! ----------------------------------------

If you can open up Yahoo's website, then it is not a DNS issue because you are resolving names. What web browser are you using? Lynx is a text-based web browser if thats what you were using. Try a different browser and let us know.

Sorry, all--WAY too busy at work here to be able to fiddle with the linux box at all!!! Madness!!!!

I have tried with lynx and also with netscape. Both will pull up websites by IP but not by url ----------------------------------------

Sorry for the long delay in responding...it was MADNESS here!

As it turns out, our madness and my problem were one and the same. The DNS server that we utilize was on the fritz! This was resulting in many odd problems--I won't bore you with details though! My problems were simply the first indications of the server dying. After my posts, all of the windows boxes started to randomly have the same issues. Go figure. After the server was fixed, everything worked fine. Go figure, huh?!

Thanks for your help, though. It is greatly appreciated!
