i fixed it
i started the computer using the boot disk, and changed the password for root in /mnt/sysimage/etc/passwd.
i generated an encrypted password using perl:
perl -e 'print crypt("passwd",11)."\n";'
i still wonder why kuser screwed up my /etc/passwd file...oh well (-:
