Hello,

I have a box that I recently installed Red Hat 7.2 to attempt setting up a terminal server. The install was put on the 2nd partition of a 20GB HDD (Win 98 on 1st) and LILO on the MBR. The box also goes thru a cable modem for net access. However, after installing RH, and attempting to start X, I was presented with an nasty error that said something to the effect of "Cannot get own host name. Your system is serverly misconfigured." Other errors such as Cannot find DCOPServer or ICE also appeared. However, I am conviced they all stem from the fact that it cannot obtain a name.

Sure enough, I typed dnsdomainename and got a "host unknown". The thing is that it can still browse the web and ping IPs and other domaine names. I have installed Red Hat 6.2 quite a few times, and had no problems with the that version. 7.2 Doesn't seem to like me tho. Despite the fact that I am basically following the same configuration I used in 6.2 (custom - w/certain packages), I cannot get a name. I hope I have provided enough information... Please help!

Hi,

Does this affect only one user or all accounts on the same box ? I recall a DCOP problem before with someone upgrading to KDE2 and having all manner of problems. What about gnome - is gnome operational (try the command 'gnome-session' ).

Hope this helps

nope, I tried using a different user and got nothing. Altough I know I shouldn't, I'm doing this a root... :-/ Gnome doesn't work either. Gives a "Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display" Again, I suspect the host name issue is the root. dnsdomainname still yeilds "Unknown host". I can now get into KDE, but that doesn't solve the problem unfortunately. Any more ideas????
