Redhat 7.2, apmd, kernel 2.4.18 problem

I have upgraded my Redhat 7.2 system kernel to 2.4.18. I can't get apmd to run. I have tried compiling the kernel with apm support, as a module, and with no kernel support. Apm runs fine (apmd starts on startup)on the standard redhat kernel.

When it is a module and I modprobe apm, I get unresolved symbol errors.

No matter what options I use in xconfig (then compilig and installing the kernel) if I run /usr/bin/apm I get a "no apm support in kernel".

Any help would be appreciated. I have been searching for a few weeks now.
