This is long but it might clarify:
I was given a VooDoo5 AGP card.
I already had a RedHat 7.1 box with a Diamond Viper 770 AGP(aka RIVA TNT2) card. The box was running on a Cisco Wireless network with an Airo 350 card.
When I took out the old video card and installed the new one, RedHat recognized it and reconfigured for the newv video card. I used Xconfigurator, and the computer told me:
Card: Voodoo5
Xserver: not used
Xdriver: tdfx
The computer would try to start X and poo all overitself. So I reinstalled the TNT2 Card and re-ran Xconfigurator.
Card: RIVA TNT2
Xserver: XF86_SVGA
Xdriver: nv
Of course I had downloaded the new drivers for the RIVA so I changed my XF86Config-4 file to read the "nvidia" driver.
The machine to start up and even boot X. But the drivers were plainly not working when I booted any 3d apps (quake, wolfenstein). So I put my 7.1 disk in and reinstalled the XServer portion of the install. Didn't do poop. I was pissed, so I grabbed my new and shiny copy of Redhat 7.2.
It gave a core dump upon starting the graphical installation, so I went with text. I upgraded the whole system, the computer saw the RIVA card again and went with it. I was happy for about five minutes until I looked over at the shiny voodoo5 with 64 megs of memory compared to the paltry old 16 on the RIVA. I put the voodoo back in. Powered up, the thing recognized the card, but again, no server. I repointed /etc/X11/X to /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA and still nothing. Whenever I start Xconfigurator (7.1 or 7.2) with the Voodoo, I get a core dump now.
I could type XF86_SVGA and the good old X cursor and background would come up at 320x200 resolution! I was overjoyed until I realized that I don't know how to get the res or bit depth any higher or run XF86_SVGA from the command line. So in an effort to alleviate my problems, I did something more stupid, I put the RIVA back in. I copied my old XF86Config-4 file back into place, and now I get some strange error message whenever I start X...
"warning cannot load bitmap modules
unloading module bitmap
error cannot load module "bitmap"
server exited abnormally
If I type XF86_SVGA now, I get my sweet 1600X1200 res desktop, but of course no shell or anything.
My questions are:
How do I get the Voodoo working?
If I can't do that how do I get my old RIVA working?
If I can't do that, how do I operate the
Xserver from the XF86_SVGA command line?
Does anybody know if there is a way to get the Airo 350 card to work with 7.2, I neglected to mention that I insmod the airo.o module manually when I start, and now I have no networking becuase 7.2 is a newer kernel.
Thanks for any answers or even pushes in a direction. I'm pulling my hair out.
