Everyone knows about M$'s Windows Update that you have to do every few days or so:), but does Red Hat have such a service? I think they do, but you have to pay for it. What is the easiest way to keep your Red Hat box up to date on all of the bug/security fixes?

Thanks,
ChrisP

That was fast, I posted that no less than 10 seconds ago! If only I could get resonses like that for all my problems:)

Although the response was fast, good luck with Up2Date. It often doesn't work properly. You need to be careful what you try to update. If you attempt to update too much stuff, it will fail with "Unable to resolve dependencies".

Bill.

Should I go with Python instead?

Up2Date runs inside of Python. A loose example is like comparing Perl to a .pl script. The ".pl" script runs inside of Perl. Kind of the same thing with Python and Up2date.

Is Up2date the only option? It doesn't sound too good. Can I manually download updates from Red Hat's website? Isn't that what the errata downloads are?

Thanks,
Chris

Sure you can download the updates, but you'll need to know the requisites for each download.

Unfortunately, it is just not yet as robust as the Windows Update (of course I am talking from a RH 6.2 perspective - it may have change in version 7).

Bill.

Hi,

Actually the latest redhat up2date 'utility' is the redhat network system, as explained here --> . It involves running a daemon (rhnsd) on your system(s) and registering one or more systems via web interface. At the basic (free) level, you essentially choose what you want to update and the daemon does it for you some time later .

More conventionally, you can run the update agent manually :

# /usr/sbin/up2date

See -->

If you use ximian gnome, then they have a very similar offering called 'red carpet'. This includes the ximian gnome channel plus redhat updates and various others - see -->

Hope this helps

Check out the info on rhn.rehat.com for the RedHat Network services.

It may also be worth looking at the Ximian RedCarpet services. It's primarily aimed at Ximian Gnome updates but it'll alos take care of standard Redhat installations.

how do i find which version of redhat linux iam using ?

Wow, this is an old post!

aggy, not sure how your question has anything to do with this, but try "cat /proc/version".
