Red Hat "up2date" question

I just finished installin a Red-Hat server. I am trying to run "up2date" to get the latest updates installed. Python keeps switching between

"...Determining revelent packages"
"...Removing packages with files marked to be deleted"
"...building transaction"

It did this all last weekend, and never actually installed any updates.

I've selected to "install after download" and skipped "kernel*".

Anyone know what is going on ?

Bill.

Your up2date agent will download a list of ALL the file names that have been added since your version was released. Then it compares it to the files you have already updated. It then deletes these names from the list and what's left is given to you on the screen with check boxes. You can choose the ones you want or "Select All" then click next. It will download the files you slected then check for dependencies then install them. If it doesn't happen this way, recheck your agents configs and your account at RedHat.

I understand everything you said. I guess perhaps my question was not clear enough ?

up2date never installs anything - it just switches between the 3 phases I mentioned. It ran for the entire weekend, and this is all the further it got.

Thanks, Bill.

I'd also be interested in ideas for troubleshooting up2date also. I've yet to have much luck with up2date. I've never let it run all weekend (machine is dial-up, after all), but even selecting a package or two from the list of available updates seldom ends in a successful update. Half the time I never make it to the list of packages.

Did you register first? RH needs info from your system and needs to set up a profile for you machine. If you don't have a registration client on your menu, type "rhn_register" from the shell. I've used up2date on 7.1 and 7.2 and didn't have any problems so I don't think I'm going to be much help.

Hi,

If you have ximian gnome (and if not, why not ?) then you can use their red carpet package manager instead. This has got a number of 'channels' including redhat updates.

Up2date seems to have had a few bugs in early versions so you could maybe try a more up to date up2date. Whats probably happening is that its dependency database is not 100% correct so when it comes to do the update it decides that it doesn't have all the bits (rpms) after all and aborts. I've certainly had that a couple of times with red carpet but it is fairly clear what the problem is with the error messages.

Regards

I have registered with RHN, and I have had up2date run successfully a time or two. After several failed attempts, I checked for and found updates for up2date. The successful runs might've been after that update, but I'm not sure. At any rate, it was still inconsistent.
Will have to check out this red carpet package manager... Thanks!
