Which flavor is better? Red Hat or Mandrake?

Now they are charging for Red Hat Downloads?

Mandrake is based on Red Hat, so they are both basically the same thing. They just come bundled with different packages. Red Hat is still the most widely used distrobution of Linux.

It's a matter of choice. You can find support for either in the form of mailing lists (which I would recommend for a newbie), which is located on both their sites. I've used Mandrake mostly and it's an easy distro for beginners but I've heard the same about Redhat (which I'm going to install tonight probably).

True, Mandrake used to be "based on Red Hat" in the beginning.

But through the versions, Mandrake has become it's own animal.

Try SuSE, it's great!

This is the Ford vs. Chevy debate. Both are cars (or trucks) and take you from here to there. One may have more power, while the other is more reliable. Which is which? ...you decide. Mike Wills

Please, if you find my post useful, let me know. [thumbsup2]

If you are just getting started in Linux, Mandrake has a better instation system than RedHat.

"Now they are charging for Red Hat Downloads?"

Huh? Can someone elaborate on that one - I've not heard about that yet!

I just checked the UCLA linux user group website, and they are still a mirror for downloads of most popular linux distributions, including Redhat 7.3 (called VALHALLA). There are three ISO images in the VALHALLA set, which fill three CD's. Try the link I have provided. This is where I got my copy of Redhat 7.3 when it was first released. I tried several other mirrors but this was the fasted I could find. They only allow two simultaneous downloads from any user at a time, which means you can download CD 1 & 2 at the same time. You will have to wait until 1 or 2 are finished before you start number 3.

Try it, Bigchris

Kewl - thanks for that Bigchris,

For all you NZ users out there wanting to not be charged/limited for international FTP traffic, check this out:
