Hey all,

Im fairly new to this, so please bare with me. I have an internal 30GB IDE that I formatted with UNIX. I'd like to toss Red Hat on it, but I'm not sure how. The only disks I have access to are the ones that are meant to run on a 386.

Is something available from Apple that's better? I need to set up a test environment for a SQL server. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Uhh, you know that OS X is based on BSD? It's a pretty good *nix operating system.

The OS X subsystem being called Darwin.

If you still wanna go with linux, i havent heard of rh ppc images, but there are a couple of alternatives, Yellow Dog Linux, my favorite Debian, and also based on Debian: Knoppix supports ppc, and many others..

Yes, I'm aware that OS X is based on Unix, but I have a complete drive that I've allocated to this purpose, so I'd like to make the most of it.

I'm going to check out Yellow Dog now since this is the seconed time I've heard that name.

Thanks all. Oh, what about installing it via Virtual PC?

Go better for knoppix, my suggestion. YDL is still rpm (and what is rpm..? =p)

Also check distrowatch for a good complete list of distros.

Installing a x86 version on VPC? Sure, somehow..

You will have to reformat your 'UNIX' drive anyway, its some kind of UDF (or xfs) format linux doesnt like too much.

So forgive me for asking it in this way, but which is the easiest to get up and running? What's going to take me the least amount of time to install and let me start developing on quicker?

Knoppix and such. Knoppix offers two scripts to install (as its a liveCD actually, but np), knx-live-inst.sh and knx2hd
Alternativley you can netinstall debian. This would be the very fastest but not too comfortant. If you consider that, consider getting the Sarge netinstall iso, not Woody.

You just lost me. Which one would be best for me (and come with instructions)?

Also look into (google) 'fink' for OSX so that you can run several Linux-based apps in X-windows on Mac.

I once thought that it would be good to have a separate linux development box and I tried out a few installations. I found myself doing more system configuration than development. If you can get by with running apps through OSX's X11 and fink, go for it. It can save a lot of hassles with alternate operating systems.

That's an interesting idea. I look at Yellow Dog, but for $89 for something I don't know if I'll be using every day... that's just a bit rough.

$89?

I have not looked at yellow dog lately but I assumed that every Linux distribution could be downloaded for free if you have the bandwidth.

knoppix - has great hardware recognizing - great base of articles, howtos, tutorials, self making liveCDs, whatever.
Its in the end debian, you'd install/remove packages via apt-get as 'usual'.

Hey all.. thanks for the help yesterday. The update is that I am currently installing Yellow Dog on my 30GB drive. It's amazing what a little handholding can do.
