Hi, My computer crashed yesterday. I was running WinME/XP/Linux. These are some of the questions i had:

1. I have reinstalled back WinME and Linux. Now I want to install WinXP. But my prob is WinXP just overwrites the MBR. How can i prevent that?

2. Also, when I boot Linux, it gives me a message - "Automount: no mount points defined" how can i define the mount points?

3. When I use the cd-rom drive in linux I have keep mounting and unmounting it to operate the drive i.e. to put a cd in and remove it. How can I do this automatically?

4. I have a Realtek 8029 ethernet card which Linux doesnt detect where can I get the correct drivers for it? How can i install them?

5. My Linux machine is primarily used as a desktop. But it is kinda slow. How can i speed it up? If I have to remove some utilities and software how do i do that?

6. Where can I get WINE for RedHat 9?

Thanks.

1. Boot from your Linux CD-ROM into rescue mode and reinstall the bootloader.
2. Unless you are using automounter, you can safely ignore that message.
3. GNOME has Magicdev that will probe the CD-ROM if there is a CD inserted. You will still have to unmount the drive though.
4. A quick Google revealed that the Realtek 8029 is NE2000 compatible. Is it an ISA card or PCI?
5. Turn off the various services that you don't use.
6. The wine download page on SourceForge has a RedHat 9 RPM:

I am definitely going to vote for you!

I want to use the automounter. But I dont know how. Can u help me with it?

Ok, I got wine installed. I even have learnt that inorder to run a windows exe i need to type wine <prog name>. But isnt there a GUI for it? How to get programs like MS Word to work in it?

Thanks

If you have wine running, just type:

wine /mnt/windows/Program\ Files/Microsoft\ Office\Office\winword.exe &

You need to know the actual path to winword.exe, but that is a relatively common one.

Word will open as a window in your linux window manager (KDE or GNOME). It only emulates the Win32API, not the window manager as well.

You can save the command that works for you (with the proper path and all) in a shortcut on your desktop if you really need an icon to run it.

Ms.Word doesnt work with Wine. It gives me some error. Can Wine corrupt my windows partition? I heard that if i run some progs directly from my win partition they may corrupt it.

I never had that experience. I ran all of MS Office (except for Access, which I never did get working) through wine.

But you shouldn't be writing to your Windows partition unless it is FAT32 or FAT. NTFS write is not really stable.

I found a script on the net somewhere called winecheck.pl. It was able to find all of my configuration errors. What error are you getting?

Drop me your email address if you can't find it. I'll forward it to you. It is a little long for the forum.
