I figured I first try using something a little more mainstream as far as Linux is concerned. I will eventually be using Debian, because I like it's flexibility a little more. Anyway, I installed Red Hat on my system, setting up a partition for Linux, a Linux swap, and then my files themselves. No dual booting crap, because I think that keeping an OS I know around would cause me not to get into Linux. Anyway, I restart after a pretty good install and after the memory check, it outputs "LI", but doesn't finish loading LILO. So I put the rescue disk in, and it looks like it loads LILO fine, and the I type LINUX, and I get some Error 0x06 or something. I don't know, but I can't get this to boot up. Any ideas out there? I reinstalled three times to no avail.

Hi,

Well, first the official error messages :

Lilo stopping at LI means "The first stage boot loader was able to load the second stage boot loader, but has failed to execute it. This can either be caused by a geometry mismatch or by moving /boot/boot.b without running the map installer."

0x06 means "``Change line active''. This should be a transient error. Try booting a second time."

If theres nothing else on the PC, Lilo must be in the master boot record (MBR) so that rules out a few issues. It sounds as if there is some problem recognising the disk geometry. Try booting with either 'lba32' or 'linear' as parameters to lilo to see if it makes a difference. To do this get the boot: prompt (exit any graphical lilo screen with control-x) and type 'linux lba32' so it looks like:

boot:linux lba32

Then press enter. If it doesn't work substitute 'linear' for 'lba32' and try again. It either of these works - edit /etc/lilo.conf and put the word 'lba32' or 'linear' as appropriate in the global section (probably at the top) and remove the one that doesn't work if its already there. Then do (as root) '/sbin/lilo -v' to update the binary boot record , reboot, and hopefully you should be in business.

If not, post more details of your harddrive and partitions (sizes, etc.). You could also try toms root/boot disk from --> .

Hope this helps
