Hi,

We have a preconfigured web server from Compaq running red hat 7.1, and it mysteriously crashed this morning and rebooted. I happened to be pinging the machine at the time, and noticed that it stopped responding after the 3rd response.

I've looked in /var/log/messages for clues, and also searched the drive for files named "crash" "dump" and "error" and also files modified today, but haven't come up with any clues.

This server is a web server running apache.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

I've looked everywhere and there is no evidence of a core dump. Are there any other thoughts? I checked apache as well, nothing out of the ordinary.

What was the server environment like before the crash?
Was the server heavily loaded? Ther are no warnings in your logs (/var/log/messages) on system errors..etc?

If none of these pan out, I would install something like tripwire against active directories, run top, and
spawn a new process and strace it once in a while to see
if you can cause a fault. If it is network related maybe
you need to check your settings in /proc/sys/net/ipv4 for
tweaks that could need to be experimented with.

You really should see something in your logfiles if it
wasn't:
a) mysterious
b) anomalous

Okay, Out of ideas.
Good luck.

Um, maybe it was hardware related? Is it on a UPS/Surge protector?
