Red Hat 8.0 and dialup

I am fairly new to Linux and have loaded it along with XP in a dual boot on both my PC and laptop with no problem. I am however having trouble with getting sound to work on my PC and the dialup ... Kppp and anything else I try to use does not seem to work. Anyone have a clue as to what I can try or have a link to a site? I am running RH 8.0 on a Dell 2650 laptop and also on a generic PC with PIV. Thanks

You could start off by letting us know what make & model is your modem. Do keep in mind that most of our modern day systems use what is called a software modem i.e. a modem without a DSP chip. The task of modulating & de-modulating is done by the CPU. Although the lack of a DSP chip make them cheep to manufacture, but most of them are not suppoerted on Linux.

ok, on my PC I am using a Zoom V.92 PCI Voice Fax modem and the sound card is a VIA AC'97 on my laptop modem is an ACTIONTEC MD56ORD V92 MDC and the sound card intel AC'97 controller Sigmatel codec

on the modem for your notebook and found out that its a winmodem (software modem). Looks like your best choice is to get an external modem that has a DSP chip (most external USB modem are also winmodems) for your notebook.

There was not much that I could find out about your Zoom modem, but most likely its also another winmodem.

If you're PC's motherboard is using a VIA 82C686 Southbridge then you may need to recompile your kernel for sound support as it IS supported.

Again, I not sure about your intel sound card.
