Ok, i'm a microsoft/novell network admin and am only now getting time to play with linux. Loaded Red Hat 7.2 this morning and am so far I am very impressed with how slick it installed and the options it comes with. Installed open office and it works like a charm.

Linux installed the hardware and had me online very quickly. Currently running on a pII/266 with 128 megs of ram.
This is a project i'm working on to get some stability with remote pc's in the field (trying to get rid of crashing windows OS). They typically will not have a user playing with it, only remotely via dial-in.

Questions...

Firstly, I need the ability for one user to dial into the red hat system and I don't know how to do it. Any takers? Keep in mind i'm a newbie :) Any good websites for information? This system will NOT be on the internet, only direct dial-in will work.

Second, I need a decent remote desktop program that will allow a windows user basic desktop access to the red hat box and be able to transfer small files from windows to linux.

Thanks...

BTW, looking at this system, it's time to install Red Hat 9.0 on my main system and give it a real go. Could soon be a linux convert ;)

mgetty is the equivalent to dialup networking/RAS from windoze.

you should take a look at 'vnc' for linux, its a virtual desktop console that is akin to Windows Terminal Server. Its well supported and .RPMs for Redhat. I have no idea how well it behaves over dialup.

Another option for the remote admin thing would be to install webmin from on the linux box and you will be able to login as root and admin your system remotely.

You know I just re-read your requirement for the Windows user to transfer files to Linux. The VNC isn't going to be good for that. Frankly most seasoned admins wouldn't use a GUI anyhow... thus you should get more familiar with

SSH

It's secure, command line (read: light on the data line!), and comes with a secure file transfer tool - 'scp'.

Its the direction you should go anyways if you're going to take your linux'ing seriously.

daver, I appreciate the post but this is a remote pc without internet. No worries about hackers unless they know the phone number to the building. Security isn't an issue and unfortunately the fellow that will be uploading files to this machine is only a basic windows user. Need to make this as simple as possible.

Need for him to dial in, transfer 1 or 2 files to the desktop, restart an application and get out. Thats pretty much all I need.

I'm looking at linux as a more stable solution but if it gets too complex for an average user to do then i'll have to scrap linux and go back to windows based.

Thanks for your replies :O)

You can opt to have the user send the files via FTP to their user directory.

I assume that the presence of the new files is what the application is supposed to be responsive to. There are applications for linux that are "filewatchers" that will monitor for a change in one or more files in a folder. If the file changes, then is takes a prescribed action - which for this case would be to launch your app.

Thus you're down to making a dialup connection and using FTP - which which there are dozens of (nearly) WinIdiot proof GUI apps.

Helping now?
