recursive ftp

how can I ftp files from server A to server B, including all subdirectories and files in those subdirectories,
by means of a script...

example:

# tar cvf etc.tar /etc

and then ftp the etc.tar

or

# rcp -p -r SystemA:/export/home SystemB:/export/home
