Using PSE3) When I select a rectangular area and then expand it (Select > Modify > Expand -- specify number of px), the expanded selection has flattened corners.

Tool mode = normal, feathering = 0. I tried resetting the tool and also replacing the preferences file. Still does it. I'm stumped. Any ideas? Thanks.

What do you mean by flattened corners? Can you explain in another way? Why not just use the pen tool to make a perfect selection in the first place?

(Try it my way, it might work...)

This happens in the full version of Photoshop too. I've never used PSE, but in the full version, you can do the following instead:

1: Make your selection
2: Go to QuickMask mode (press Q)
3: Filter > Other > Maximum and enter a value
4: Exit QuickMask mode (press Q again)

I don't know if this is possible in PSE, but you never know!

blueark,

Filter > Other > Maximum doesn't do anything in full photoshop. I don't know about Elements.

You can resquare the corners by using the rectangle selection tool in add mode although that's probably not what you wanted.

er... yes it does! Try it:

Make a rectangular selection somewhere in the middle of the image and go to QuickMask mode. The selected area will appear white in the middle of a coloured area (red by default). Applying the maximum filter will expand this white area by whatever radius you specify. Exiting QuickMask mode will give the required effect.

The only reason I can think of why this mightn't do anything is if you go to Select > Reselect as soon as you enter QuickMask mode, because then the filter would be applied to an empty area. But using the default settings, it will work.

Kiddpete, just tried it with full version, works fine man, just make sure what you are trying to change is ontop of all other or Flatten Image prior to change. Then Filter > Other >Maximum
