You can do a restore of a BAK file without any database to restore to. When selecting what BAK file to use, simply do the following:
1) Right-click on the Databases tree-branch, and select Restore Database.
2) In the "To Database" field, TYPE in the name of the database that you want.
3) Under the Source for Restore section, instead of selecting From Database, pick From Device. Then select the location of the BAK file by clicking on the elipses to the right.
4) One the file has been selected, put a checkmark in the "Restore" column under the "Select a backup to restore" section. (White box)
5)Click over to the "Options" tab (upper left corner of the window). Since you do not have the DB already on the system, you do not need to check "Overwrite the existing database". Then, in the "Restore the database files as" section, pick the location of the database files (MDF and LDF).
6) If you have subsequient Tran Log backup files, make sure to mark the appropriate recovery state radio-button.
7) Click OK, and wait for the restore to finish.
8) Add any users in the database to the system that need to be registered with SQL Server, to ensure they will be able to login appropriately.
