The Good: I can successfully restore from backup the Information store and transaction logs. Restore a mailbox etc etc.
The Bad: I need to look at the message tracking from that date of backup. I don't know if when you backup the server it takes all of the message tracking with it. And if so how do i look at these old transactions that took place at the time of backup. Using the Recovery Storage Group for exchange 2003.

Your message tracking log files will be stored (by default) in a folder located at x:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\servername.log,

If you were backing this directory up, you should be ok.
