Recovery console wont accept Administrator password

I have a system error on bootup. I have the fix from Microsoft - I need to extract a file from the XP cd, from the Recovery console.

When I boot up the XP CD, select 'R' for a repair installation, then select which installation it is.

It then asks for the Administrator password - I left it blank. It wont accept a blank password nor anything else I type.

I tried resetting the password through a 3rd party boot disk, that I've used successfully in the past, it tells me the password is blank and wont allow me to overwrite it.

Can anyone help me get past this??
