Recovering the rolling ball of the mouse

Some months ago I have seen that somebody has asked how to recuperate the scrolling capacity of the rolling ball of the mouse once you've lost it. I don’t know if so far an answer has been supplied. It seems to me that, at least in InDesign CS, this very useful feature turns back by ctrl-clicking (or even double-clicking) in an area of the page without any object.
