Recovering messages

I have a 400 on 3.5 that there must be a corrupt file somewhere on the hard drive because services don't all start. it never fully comes up, i.e. no voice mail or unified manager, you cant even get into the serial port. When you hook up a monitor it looks normal, no indication that it is a bad hard drive there.

My question is does anyone know a way to just recover messages off the hard drive? This system has already been replaced and the user is up and running on a new system. They would like to know if we can recover any of the messages before I go ahead and re-image a drive and reinitialize the system. The drive is accessible when I connect it to a IDE to USB adapter. I can access the whole file system but don't know where to look for messages if it is possible.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Pull the base function tray (BFT) and look at the CAPS, if there green there bad, if there blue there good. this is a know problem, rebooting makes it work for a while, but the BFT needs to be replaced.

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Caps are good. I already tested with a good hard drive and system comes up ok. I know it's something on that hard drive thats bad. Probably some file in the os is corrupted.

No.
You cannot retrieve messages from mailboxes on a defective BCM HDD.

Serial port is not effected by a bad hard drive, you could take it out and the serial port would still work. So it's not a hard drive problem. Also the UM would work without the HD.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't think there was a way to recover the messages just had to ask.

The issue is definitely the hard drive though. I was able to replace and reinitialize the drive and restore all functionality just back at a default state.
