Hi there,

I may be in a situation where I need to recover an Exchange 5.5 SP4 server that currently runs on NT4 to a replacement server that due to it being new cannot run NT4.

I am looking at putting Windows 2000 SP4 on the server and restoring using the Online backup (Arcserve 2000)

I have read that this can be a real problem and wondered if any of you guys had any tips?

Cheers

J

This shouldn't pose any problems, provided you install and confgure the new server so that it looks just like the old server (name, drive assignments, etc). Make sure you run the optimizer and put your databases and log files in the same locations as the server you're replacing.

When all else fails, READ THE DAMN BOOK!

You could also use the new server to run a virtual NT4 box. If you havent already looked into VMWare or Virtual PC/Server you are missing out on great technology.

Just really a follow on from this question. I'm about to move over xchange 5.5. with all the db's from one nt4 box to another....is there a quick way in xchange admin to find out how its been setup directory wise so i can replicate the setting on the new server?

Seanos, if you click on the server under configuration in Exchange System Manager and then go the the properties - Database Paths you'll see where the logs and DB's are stored.

On restoring to a 2000 SP4 box, I've just been through it and it worked no problems. The important thing is to have the drive lettering the same and make sure Exchange is at the same SP and hotfix versions as the existing instance. If the Information Store doesn't start after the restore (which is highly likely!) you can use isinteg and eseutil to get it to a "Consistent" state. See this article for more details, it saved me :)

Hope this helps

Hi!
Here is a demo of online restore of Exchange 5.5. You might find useful step4 - Checking "Restore in Progress" key and replaying exchange log files:
