I had a crash with NT 4.0 sp6 and lost all the settings for delphi 5 the palatte is empty other than 'frames' and everything else is mucked up. i did do a tape restore that did not seem to fix it at all although the system came back up from the dead. What files need to live on the C: drive for everything to show up again without reinstalling D5 and all the other extra components. Any other key files or settings that need to be found?

In the process of doing this i finally ended up installing Win2k pro for a couple of reasons probably none of them good, mostly graphics and root drive size. other than delphi and the tape drive and old scanner that i can live without or put on a different machine everything else works fine. I looked in the NT4 registry back up and the win 2k registry. The win 2k has a lot of place holders for the values in the NT 4 registry but are blank. is there any way to get the values from one to another short of the tedious and mistake prone job of typing them in? Or do i need to go back to NT4 fix the registry and perform the upgrade<?> to win 2k again?

the registry is located in the files user.dat and system.dat

in fact, you can load these files as a new hive in your current registry and export/import them.

Ok so i ama registry dummy.. Are you saying I can import sections of an NT 4.0 registry into one for win2k and only do a section that i want. is this converion documented anywhere so that i might read how it is done?

click on start then choose run and type regedt32

click on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window and select Load hive from registry menu. this will load the NT4's machine registry into the hive you selected. then you can export the borland sections to a text file (.reg file). then you must edit this text file, making sure the registry paths are correct and then you can reimport this file just by double clicking it. if you a REAL registry dummy I would advise to ask someone (who has more registry/windows knowledge) to do it for you.

hope this helps a bit

If you have your Delphi install cd, you can do a "registry only" install that will update your registry with the default Delphi keys. Any third-party components that you have won't be there, but the base Delphi stuff all will be.

Would the smart thing to do be do a registry only install of D5 and then just reinstall all the componets one at a time.
