I need to recover a couple of e-mails that were accidentally deleted using Outlook 2003. I have read all the theory about corrupting the PST (DOS command debug etc... HEX editor) then running scan PST tool and it restores deleted to a lost and found folder but I can't seem to make it work. We do not have exchange, we have an outside provider for e-mail handling. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

ask your outside email provider if they have backups

It all depends on what "outside provider" means in this case. If they are just hosting the pop3 server, then they would probably not have a backup at all of a PST file.

If they don't and you are storing your PST files locally on each PC (which is theoretically the only supported way WITHOUT Exchange), then you need to implement some sort of backup on each PC that will copy the PST file nightly to a shared location (server) WITHOUT user intervention.

I know this doesn't help the current situation.

Is it possible you could set the account up on an fresh machine? Unless you have the advanced settings set to 'not leave a copy on the server' you would be able to download all the mail again and retrieve the mails you deleted previously... just a thought and is dependant on how you have Outlook setup regarding leaving a copy of the messages on the server.

Good luck.

I used to have a handle on life... but it broke. Cpt. Red Bull

what about OWA? It has a recover deleted emails feature.
