I have a good 250Gb SATA Seagate Hard drive from a failed HP computer, from which I need to recover some data and photos. The computer I need to use for recovery is both Pata and Sata enabled and the operating system is on an Ide hard drive. What are my next steps, is it as simple as hooking up my Sata drive to my motherboard sata connectors?

Since the sata drive is jumperless will it be viewed as master or slave on this setup?

I need to be sure before I proceed as the photos and data are very important.

You should be able to install the SATA drive and examine it with the IDE drive, just be sure in BIOS that IDE is selected as the first boot device. I would push SATA all the way to the bottom of the "Boot Devices" list.

Keep in mind that Windows writes a little bit of data to every drive connected to it but that should not be a problem. Ideally you should get a "Found New Hardware" dialog followed by "The New Hardware is installed and ready to use" and I would immediately pull as much data as possible from the drive ASAP. If, for any reason, you can't see the drive, STOP USING IT and post back.

Thanks Tony, all went well as photos and data are safe on dvd. I had a usb 3 1/2 in. enclosure though not for SATA but I ordered one today.
