Hi all.

I have an outlook file called "outlook.pst" that I saved in 2002. I would like to recover and read the email from this file. I'm not on any exchange server just a standalone PC.

I installed the version of outlook that comes along Office 2000 and tried to open the file and got the message below. I followed the directions and was unable determine what to do.

Would someone please point me in the right direction? I just want to read the email in the file.

Outlook error message:
Unable to open your default e-mail folders. Outlook could not start because a location to send and receive mail could not be found. To add a location, such as a personal folder file, double-click the mail icon in the Windows Control Panel.

Thanks in advance for any help.

How did you try and open the file? The easiest way would be to get Outlook 2000 up and running. Then go to Tools, Services, Add, Personal Folders and browse for your outlook.pst file you are trying to open. You will end up with two sets of personal folders but that is not a problem.

It sounds as though you are trying to remove the default set of folders first, which means that Outlook does not have anywhere to deliver messages.

A second option would be to go to File, Import and import the messages from the PST into your current folders.

Two things I see. Did you double-click the mail icon in the Windows Control Panel? Also you say the file is in 2002 format and you are trying to open it with the older 2000 version of outlook. That usually does not work.

Thanks Tightpants and franklin97355.

When I said 2002 I was talking about the year 2002. I was trying to open the file by clicking on the outlook icon on the desktop.

I went to the mail icon in the Windows Control Panel and setup the personnel folder and it works. Thanks again.
