I was having a lot of system freeze up problems with XP Pro SP-1. The computer would receive a "STOP ERROR MESSAGE" on a blue background giving a series of Alpha-Numeric error code messages. I did a system restore that did not correct the problem. I uninstalled a firewall program called, "Zone-Alarm," after reading information that it might be causing the problem. I tried using, "Event Viewer" to isolate the issue but to no avail. I tried running my Anti-Virus software Extendia AVK, but the system would crash during the scan. Finally, I went into the System Configuration Utility and selected "Selective Startup," and disabled every item in the list except my Anti-Virus Software, and restarted the system. I found that the system began to operate normally again except when I ran my Anti-Virus Software. It would seem that Extendia AVK was indeed the cause of my system lockig up. It was really strange as I had previously just updated my virus definitions and that appears to be when the problems began. Oh well I hope this post helps others fix faultly system stabillity problems. PS: I removed Extendia AVK and reinstalled another Anti-Virus program instead and the system is once again stable.
