Recovering a file copied over during a re-installation

I was badly advised to re-install a program, which copied over a .dat file. I have tried system restore but that hasnt rolled back the file to the previous version. Will this file be somewhere on the disk (hidden from XP)?
Is there any program i can use to find this file?

Thats great thanks, it found the file alright, but is there a freeware equivelent?
