I ran a defrag on WIN 2K and it completed properly.

When I rebooted the Primary User settings were gone except for the User Name & password (user was also an administrator).

I found a folder in Documents & Settings that had the UserName.bak designation.

Does anyone know how I recover the User from a .bak status to a valid user again??

check the user profiles tab on My Computer Properties.

if you see the old user and the new user, try using the 'copy to' function on the old user profile to copy it to the directory of the new user.
