I have got a new customer who has a 2007 exchange server. The customer suspects that some of the employess are about to start their own business and over the last few months have copied customer data useful in there bid to start their own business. The company owner wonders if it possible to recover mail between the suspected employess that has been deleted over the last few months. Mail has been hard deleted from outlook and i know that the dumpster settings have been set to default settings.Full backups are taken monday to friday and there are only 5 tapes. Is there any sofware that can possibly recover the deleted mails? What can be done in the future to keep a permenant copy of deleted mails? If it makes any differance, all users work via a terminal server. All suggestions and comments are most welcome!

What is the deleted items policy set to? By default that will let you go back 30 days.

Your customer has hopefully learned the value in backups since their current backup scheme is insufficient.

I would recommend using a hard disk based backup such as ShadowProtect from Storage Craft which will let you make incremental backups throughout the day.

If you don't have monthly or weekly archives then you can forget about retrieving the emails.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

This is exactly why third party archiving solutions are available. Not only do they grab whatever you want, but give you full searching to find the answers you're looking for.

Mailarchiva is a good (and free) mail archiving solution, we use it here. It won't help you out of your current situation, but it's worth looking at for future queries.

What are the issues of using journaling or MAPI, Pat?

Other than a SUBSTANTIAL increase in IOPS (up to 1200%) for your Exchange storage? Other than the fact that journaling doesn't grab all message classes? Other than MAPI continously crawling through mailboxes? Other than you can't track user changes to email messages?

Cheers, I was just curious as to the reasons behind your statement!

Many thanks to everyone for helping me out on this one. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a solution where a copy all mail could be stored offsite to satisfy legal requirements
and would be easy to search?

hi pat

thats right. it is a firm of lawyers,so a 3rd party provider would be good.any suggestions?

A 3rd party archiving solution like Mimosa's NearPoint was give you eDiscovery for legal purposes, and user based searching.
