Hi,

I have a Western Digital 80gig 7200 RPM hard drive that creashed. I cannot get it to boot up and makes a clicking sound when I try.

I know that I can ship it back to Western Digital, but I need some date from the drive first.

Does anyone know of any techniques that I can use to try and recover my data?

Thanks,
Mark

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but your choices are limited to paying a data recovery company to open it up and fix what is broken and spool it off to another mass storage device. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

I agree with Ed, just got a WDC 30GB replaced for the 'clicking' problem. First it wouldn't load SMART then the BIOS couldn't even see it. When that happens, nothing on the drive can be accessed by normal means, has to go to a data recovery firm such as Ontrack .

Guys,

Definately not what I wanted to hear, but I suspected as much.

I had heard there were numerous "tips" on how to get a drive back up temporarily to get data extracted. One such tip was to put the drive in the freezer. Something about the cold expanding pieces that could be rubbing together.

Anyhow, thanks for the advise.

Mark

Where did you hear tips like this? I'm having the same problem and i just wanna try some things to get my data back before i just give up and throw my HD at a wall. If you have some links for ideas like this that would be great. thanks.
