I have a customer who clicked Save on an excel file and wrote over all of her good data. Is there anyway to get the old version of the file back?

Thanks in advance,

J

if the user did not log off and did not close excel, you MIGHT be able to find a open copy of the original in a temp folder... search the default office temp folder and cross your fingers.

more then likely your screwed..

Is the customer on a network? Do they backup each night?

Is so, they should immediately contact IT and get yesterday's copy

If they don't regularly back up everything important, they should start doing so now, before they lose anything more.

If the file was stored on a W2K3 server AND they have Shadow Copy enabled they might be able to recover an earlier version.

Using Explorer navigate to the file in question, right click on the file and select properties. Then click on the "Previous Versions" tab and see if you have anything there. How far back you will be able to recover to, if at all, will depend on how often Shadow Copy runs and how many copies are kept before they are overwritten.

Cheers.
