Hi all

Whats the easiest way to recover a single document SPS2003+w2k3. I believe the files are stored in an SQL database and I have this user that has deleted 3 files in as many weeks and I know stuff all about this.

Any help would be much appreciated.

David

Hello,

Eventhough all SharePoint data i stored in SQL, I does not allow you to just extract/copy the documents out of SQL, they are not stored in SQL as "clean" documents..they are put in there like "blobs"

I have heard about utilities that would be able to extract the documents / document libraries from SQL..will check and see if I can find it. Otherwise it might be a programmatic way of doing it, but since I am not a developer/programmer I don't know how..

With the standard backup&restore utilities that comes with SharePoint there is no itemlevel backup and restoration support.
When I have had users delete documents and lists I have had to restore the complete site to another server and extract the documents from there. Now I have implemented a 3rd party backup and restore system that has itemlevel capabilities.

Thomas

Thanks Thomas

It seems like a fundamental floor in the product to me. I am from Novell Netware background and for years if a users delete's a or overwrites a file, then the help desk can recover it in seconds using the Salvage util. When you have a couple of hundred users files get lost\screwed or corrupted all the time. Surely there has to be a better way of bringing back a single document? Currently we restore all three databases to an alternate Server.

Thanks

David

THOMAS2000, I am just implementing Sharepoint Portal Server 2003, what is the third party tool you are using and do you recommend it? I'd like to get by backup/restore procedures sorted before I put it into production.

Hello,

We are using Doc Ave 3.1 from Avepoint. You can check it out on however the license cost is high!! But it has performed VERY well for our environment.

There is a 3rd party webpart available also called PowerRecycle I think, which allows you to apply a recycle bin functionality to SharePoint. Do a search on the net and you should find it.

Thanks, looks pretty good. Hopefully the powers that be are happy to spend the $. One more question, does it just backup SPS Portal, SPS services and the SQL2000 db or does it backup the whole server as well? Might be an easier sell for me If I dont need another copy of Arcserve as well.

Thanks

Hello,

It just backup the SPS and WSS, so you will need another sofware to backup your server. I would also recommend that you schedule backupjobs in SQL aswell, just to be on the safe side, that is what I am doing.

Regards,
Thomas
