Record Locking in IWR Server

Has anyone experienced record locking in SQL Server? We have a web based CRM application pointing to a SQL database, and whenever a report is run on the live database during the working day at my clients, it locks the records it needs which obviously means that the application cannot be used while reports are being run!!!
I can't find any documentation on this in the Cognos application - does anyone have any info or can provide help please????
