I listen to radio programs via internet. I wonder how to record them as mp3 files so that I can listen to the recorded programs later. Can this be done with vb6 and which controls will achieve it? Many thanks.

If they are streaming through http protocol, check you temporary internet files...

If you mean via MMS (MultiMedia Streaming) protocol...
such as: mms://yourwebaddress/my_stream.asf

(Not to be confused with cell phone MMS (MultiMedia Messaging Service) which is used to transfer photos, videos, and songs on picture phones...
such as: ##########@mms.cellcompany.com)

It's not very easy at all...

The only program that I could ever get to do this is called HiDownload (
here are some other links to browse through:

I assume it is possible to do with VB, perhaps through APIs, but I have know Idea where to start ;-)

-Sorry-

Hope This Helps Anyway...

Search around the VB Sites for Basic Sound Recorder Examples. Then look into the option of recording the STEREO DOWNMIX, which is what is processed by the soundcard BEFORE (But to your ears, AS) it come out of your speakers.

has a good example if you search for "sound recorder"

However, the MP3 is going to be a problem, normally you will require 3 party conversion software.

The way to go with VB is to find a DLL that encodes MP3 format sound. One I can think of is LAME (lame_enc.dll) but whether or not it is free I have no idea....

If you do find an Encoding DLL, it's documentation will tell you how to use the functions it contains.

For the benefit of the site administrators.. I have no Idea about the Legality of recording Internet Radio Streams and do not endorse it any way. If this post is offensive or illegal, please do not hesitate to remove it.

Hope it helps anyway... ;-)

-Ditto-

And for the record...

I never tried to save mp3s...

I just recorded a few Music Videos (which I don't think you can purchase...) to play on my Pocket PC when I went on a trip...

Music Videos are created to promote music, and as far as I know are legal...??? (Don't quote me on that)

I'd be careful about saving copywritten media...

MMS may be a protected service as well, and cracking it may also lead to legal issues, if not licensed to use it...

The Griffin Radio Shark allows you to do this.

Y'See.. Now the title of THAT program leads me to believe that there is something very fishy (bad pun, i know) about ripping Internet Radio.

I've used High Criteria's Total Recorder for the last several years. Costs about $12.00. Records directly to .mp3 too but you have to download an encoder and they provide instruction for that. Lame works for me.

Yeah, I've used LAME to rip CDs, which will basically be the same process (Both are converted to WAV first)
