Record Curtain problem

Hello

I'm using GM 5.5 - SQL.

I have 2 databases. Within each database, there are a large # of curtained records that can only be viewed by a small percentage of the users.

I have kept curtained records in the one database for a couple years without a problem. I set my second database up the same way, now I am having this problem....

When the user selects file | open to select 1 of the 2 databases, the one will default to an uncurtained record but when the user selects File | Open then the second database - GM always opens to a curtained record. (Its a big gray screen that reads "private to slist group" - its real ugly)

The user can select Lookup | Company to jump to another record, but if they select file |open, go to the first database, then File | Open to return to the second, they end up back on a curtained record.

Hopefully I explaned this well. Any suggestions at all are appreciated.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

Unfortunately theres not a lot you can do about it. What I'd recommend is making that first default record a default non-curtained record....

How do you set the first default record? When I go to database1, it is fine. If I switch to database2, I get the curtain window. I select Lookup | Company | and type the letter "A", then I'm on a non-curtained record.

Frome here, I do File | Open back to database1, works fine, then File | Open database2, curtained record again.

If you know how to set a default record for a user, please let me know. I know GM writes to the user ini file for the last record the user was on, but in the curtained record scenario, the parameter in the INI file is blank.

Thanks for responding
Dave

When you open a second database, it looks for the record you were on last according to the username.ini. If that record is not found in the second database (it usually isn't) it goes to record number 1 on dBase or in SQL, I believe it goes to the top of the accountno sort. So, basically, you'll be looking at the oldest record in the database, based on the accoutno (which starts with a DATE (substitute 0 for the A)).

Get an older record dropped in there or add a new record and manually modify it's accountno to look older (give it a fake ID?) via direct editing of the contact1 and 2 table records.. Of course, manually editing the record might not be such a great idea...

You could also just take that initial record and create a duplicate record out of it and replace the original (with the OLD accountno) with dummy data and uncurtain the original...

Thats awesome, I love getting into the guts of Goldmine to get it do things.

I'm using SQL, it doesn't seem to go to the oldest accountno.

I think you have me on the right track though. I'm going to keep looking. If I find it, I'll post it.

Thanks

Your awesome, I was really stuck.

I created a test account, made them a member of the group of the users that could see the curtained records. Uncurtained the record that it defaulted too, now it works fine for users not in the group.

It was the VP of IT that was on me for this one, I'm glad I can end the week saying its solved.

Thanks again, have a great weekend.

Yeah, it goes to the top of the sort for the record it displays.. Not sure which sort, though.. Maybe RECID? I thought it was accountno, for some reason, but then, I've been wrong before. :)

Glad you got things smoothed out!

You may be right, I did some imports through Enterprise Manager, so that may have messed it up. I looked at Recid, but that wasn't it (on mine at least).

I'm glad its smoothed out too, thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
