record counts for multi groups

i have a report that i need to base on record counts, the format is :-

header1
header2
header3
header4
footer4 - count of records in group 4
footer3 - count of records in group 3
footer2 - count of records in group 2
footer1 - count of records in group 1

i have tried putting a counter in the detail and that works for group 4 but is does not work for the other groups
