Hello,

We're upgrading our NetWorker server and I would like some advice on which kind of machine we should go for. The server will initially be used to backup 30 clients but that number can raise to up to 50 clients.

Thanks.

Hi

Difficult to give advice on specs for Networker servers.

Number of clients is only one consideration....it's more about how much data is going to be handled amongst other things.

Those 30 clients could include 10 E10k's for all anyone knows ;-)

Hi,

Unix or Windblows server? What type of clients? SAN, NAS? Seperate backup LAN? Storage Nodes, DDS, DBs, E-Mail system(s)?

The most important will be the kind of hardware used on that server.

Keep that in mind :

0,5 CPU / drive
256-512 MB RAM / drive
1 CPU / gigabit Ethernet NIC

Number of clients will be important to estimate the size of the disk that'll store the indexes.

Hope this helps.

We'll be using a StorageTek L80 with 6 SDLT320 drives and 80 slots.
What's the best hardware specs to drive this library?
We still haven't decided whether we'll use Unix/Linux or Windows. Any suggestions?

Thanks

I've met all kind of server operating systems for Networker and all worked very well (yes, even Windows).
So I just can suggest that you choose the one you know the best.

For me It would be at LEAST: 3CPU / 2GB RAM and enough disk space to handle indexes.
