I've currently set the limit of outgoing and incoming email message sizes to 5 MB. I am frequently getting requests to up this limit. I'm hoping to get a discussion about what the general experience is in this regard. I've done a short search on google and found that the limits range from maybe 2 MB up to 50 MB. What do all of you suggest? Why?

Thanks for your input.

5 mb can be too limiting if people have a need to send large graphics files.

I just prefer to limit the storage capacity and let people send whatever they want.

Depends on how big a pipeline you have to the Internet and how many users you have. If you open it up completely, then a few users sending huge emails could choke your server and bandwidth.

We set our limit at 10MB, anything above that and the users are advised to use FTP instead.

It also depends on where they want to send to, alot of server reject messages larger then 5MB. If that is the case, no point upping the limit.

As Marc says, a lot of remote servers have a 5MB limit. If you have a 64kb leased line, it needs to be lower, if you have a 100mb ethernet connection it can be higher.

I'd say 1 minute on your line.

Internally I say 1MB unless absolutely required - if it is going to be needed elsewhere then email is better than sending it on a CD.

They still throw 150MB around like text...
