What book(s) do you guys recommend I read to start comfortably using mySQL? At my work I've been requested upon to create an inventory system for tracking all the hardware and computer parts we recieve and making sure there's documentation on it. Our budget is tight so I figured that I could use mySQL with PHP Myadmin to design/create the database. What do you guys recommend for this type of task?

thanks

The best around is reckoned to be 'MySQL' by Paul DuBois, with a purple cover. My own copy is dog-eared from use.

Is this book good for taking me from step #1 and working up?

It covers everything from "what is a database?" upwards.

how much does it get into integrating PHP with mySQL?

It has a full chapter on the PHP API.
