Does Microsoft have a recommended size for attachments in Exchange 2000? I just limited the size of attachments to 30 Mb and I'm wondering whether is this too high or too low in relation to what Microsoft recommends.
Also, does anyone know what would be a Microsoft recommended mailbox size? Many of my users are well above 1 Gig and I'd like to limit those as well.

Thanks to all,

Hiya

We restrict attachment size to 5Mb.

We also restrict mail boxes to 200Mb.

This may seem a bit draconian but it works! FTP is used for transfer of large files and users have to archive off email they want. The mailboxes can be smaller because they don't contain large attachments!

That all depends on the business you're in. We've done 5MB attachment limits, with ordinary users having a 50MB and management having up to 250MB. We've run the mailbox manager to help 'persuade' users to keep thing in check, or they start to get the 'black hole mentality' and store stuff in their mailbox until the end of time.

Thanks 58sniper and djcrane. I wanted to know if my restrictions are "draconian" but apparently, I'm quite liberal (30 Mb for attachments and unlimited for mailboxes).

Unlimited is really NOT the way you want to go (reference "black hole mentality"). I've piled 4000+ people on one Exchange box with not much trouble. Force the users to do their own housecleaning. Otherwise you end up with other problems like drive space issues, increased scanning and backup times, etc.

There is no such thing as "Unlimited". The ultimate limit is the size of the drive the store is on multiplied by the SIS ratio. Trust me, you don't want to hit this limit.

Companies need to look at email just like anthing else; What is the business value? If the business value exists, then they need to design a messaging system to store and protect it. If the business value does not exist, then whack it; mailbox cleanup agents, storage limits, etc.

Per email - 30 seconds of dedicated outbound bandwidth.
Mailbox = 80% of disk space divided by users envisaged on the system if you run enterprise or 14GB divided by same number of users if on standard.

NEVER leave the MB size unrestricted...try moving to a new server when half-dozen users have 2+ GB MB's.

Exchange Standard has a single 16GB store limit. Exchange Enterprise supports multiple stores.

It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Hey djcrane:

How do you restrict the size of the attachments/mailboxes?

thanks in advance.
