Recommendations for Performance Logs and Alerts

We've had some issues recently where some of our servers were inaccessible because of high CPU usage. I'd like to setup perofmrance logs oan alerts on these if possible. Can anybody give me some "best practices" for monitoring CPU usage, memory usage, bandwidth utilization and disk space usage using Performance Logs and Alerts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated
