My new home built will have a single 74 Gb hard drive (WDC Raptor) at the outset. I have an 80 GB external where I will save some data, each day/week. Later, I probably buy another SATA hard drive. But, 74 Gb suits me just now.

What is the recommendation to partition the 74 Gb's?

How many partitions should I create and approximately how many Gb's per partition.

I was thinking:

C: 15 GB WIN/XP Pro
D: 15 GB My Programs
E: 15 GB My Data
F: 15 GB Various
G: 14 GB My source CD's

Personally I wouldn't have so many - but that's up to you (eg, programs nearly all write/use files in system area - \windows\system32 on the C: drive, so having them in separate partition not much use (from a recovery point of view). As for sizes - you're also best judge, as presumably you have an idea of what you have in each category, and which are most likely to expand.

Thanks.

Based on your comments/questions, I am rethinking the allocation to more like: 25GB + 25Gb and 24 GB

Regards.

I have tried different combinations and the following seems to be about the best:-

C: for WINXP only
D: for sexond installation of Win XP
E: for page file
F: for office
G: for data
H: for other progs
I: for data back-up
J: for Miscellaneous

I recommend the following:

1 partition for the OS (~8-10GB)
1 partition for everything else.

Defrag C: once in a while. hehe .. takes less time with a small partition..much better

Having a separate partition for the pagefile is a good idea as it helps stop the page file being defragmented.
